He will then visually inspect the inside of your mouth and lips and feel the soft tissues of your mouth, lips, tongue and neck to detect any suspicious lesions or lumps. If anything does appear out of the ordinary, additional tests such as a biopsy  may be necessary for further evaluation. Biopsies require the removal of a portion of cells that a laboratory can examine to look for cancerous cells that may exist. If Dr. Benton determines that a biopsy is needed, a referral to an oral surgeon will be made. With a diagnosis of oral cancer, the oral surgeon, in conjunction with our team, can discuss your options for treatment.
