Dr. Kyle Benton of Benton Family Dentistry in Hot Springs, Arkansas, knows everyone wants a healthy smile, but certain conditions can impact its health and appearance. While tooth decay and periodontal disease are two conditions that can do this, another is oral cancer. All patients will benefit from regular oral cancer screenings.
Our dentist describes oral cancer screening as a quick and easy physical examination of the head and neck area to look for any abnormalities or signs that could potentially be cancerous. During an oral cancer screening, Dr. Kyle Benton will take a comprehensive medical history and ask questions about lifestyle habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and whether you spend a lot of time in the sun. He will then visually inspect the inside of your mouth and lips and feel the soft tissues of your mouth, lips, tongue and neck to detect any suspicious lesions or lumps. If anything does appear out of the ordinary, additional tests such as a biopsy may be necessary for further evaluation. Biopsies require the removal of a portion of cells that a laboratory can examine to look for cancerous cells that may exist. If Dr. Benton determines that a biopsy is needed, a referral to an oral surgeon will be made. With a diagnosis of oral cancer, the oral surgeon, in conjunction with our team, can discuss your options for treatment.
It is essential to get regular oral cancer screenings as they can help detect soft tissue changes early on when treatment is more likely to be successful and potentially less extensive and invasive. It also helps reduce anxiety by providing peace of mind that you are in good health.
Dr. Kyle Benton stresses the importance of an oral cancer screening at least every 12 months during your regular check-up visits and encourages patients to take advantage of this essential service.
